Tritrichomonas foetus - InPouch™ TF

Tritrichomonas foetus in cattle is a Sexually Transmitted Infection and is associated with aborted calves, low birth weight, or delayed calving, which can result in decreased herd yields of 8-29%. Bull infection rates are 6-8%, but have been found to be as high as 44% in some rangeland areas of the western US. Bovine trichomonosis is caused by the flagellate protozoan, Tritrichomonas foetus.

Transmission of the infection is by coitus. Bulls are the long term carriers of the disease whereas cows clear the infection spontaneously after 3-4 heat cycles; therefore bulls are the primary source of testing for the organism. Organisms are present in small numbers around the preputial cavity of bulls, with some concentration in the fornix and around glans penis.
